HubSpot: Inbound Marketing and Alumni Communications

Earlier this week, I was at a conference featuring Dharmesh Shah (@dharmesh on Twitter).  Dharmesh is the Founder of HubSpot and a pioneer in the “Inbound Marketing” space.  Dharmesh and the team at HubSpot help their clients get more website visitors and leads through search engines (SEO), blogs and social media.

From their website:

“HubSpot’s vision is to provide a (killer) marketing application and provide great advice to small businesses enabling them to leverage these disruptive effects of the internet to “get found” by more prospects shopping in their niche and to convert a higher percentage of prospects into customers.”

I first learned about HubSpot from my friend and fellow entrepreneur Rafael Corrales, Founder of LearnBoost.  Since then, I have been inspired by HubSpot’s ability to consistently create great content that makes me want to keep going back to their site.  HubSpot truly walks the walk.

So what does HubSpot have to do with alumni relations? First, I think HubSpot offers excellent guidance for any communications professional.  I have enjoyed learning about Inbound vs. Outbound Marketing and there is a nice overview here.

Second, yesterday HubSpot published a neat infographic featuring many Facebook statistics that should be relevant to any alumni relations professional.  I’ve published an example below and the full list is available here.  Next week I am meeting with Sam Clemens, HubSpot’s Vice President of Product, to brainstorm about how Inbound Marketing principles might better apply to alumni communications and mobile technology.  I’ll keep you posted.

Do any of the statistics below surprise you?  I surprised to my home state of Iowa trailing the rest of the Midwest.

Ever True!
